Hiking the Mount Vesuvius
To reach the famous crater of Mount Vesuvius, take the Gran Cono Trail (Trail No. 5). This moderately challenging hike offers stunning vistas and brings you right to the edge of the volcano’s rim.

What to expect?
Starting at the Piazzale in Ercolano, 1,000 meters above sea level, the trail is well-maintained and winds through striking volcanic landscapes. Along the way, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of the Bay of Naples and the dramatic crater. While other trails on Vesuvius offer distinct perspectives, the Gran Cono Trail remains the most popular and direct path to the summit.
Getting there
Access the trailhead via the Ercolano-Vesuvio Provincial Road. Parking is available along the road, managed by the Municipality of Ercolano. Make sure to purchase your trail tickets before reserving parking at www.parkingsuvio.it.
